Only place in town where I can get pupusas!!! I always get the chicharrones and queso ones! And it's a super decent price for one pupusa! And it fills me up fast.

This place is amazing. Such great food. Very consistent and what I get from them. Always good. Sometimes you'll have a little wait for your food, but that's because they're busy because they're great. Great "hole in the wall"

I wouldn't have picked it passing by, but that meal was amazing! Thanks yelp! The atmosphere leaves something to be desired, and the food presentation was not anything special. But the beauty of this places is in the delicious flavors and colorful tastes of the food itself. Go on, take a leap of faith and give it a try!

It's not really Mexican like Yelp says, but Salvadorian. So if you're looking for Enchiladas and burritos you'll be disappointed. They do have really good home made Papusas and Tamales. I had the combo plate with Papusas and Tamales and some Platinos. Everything was fresh and tasty. The staff was super friendly and they had great service. If I'm ever back in the area, I'd definitely go back.

It's difficult to describe Santa Maria as a destination for a foodie but if you're into Latin American cuisine you have to come here. Maybe I'm just full of bad luck but I am fairly certain that English doesn't happen here. That's cool though, the menu has numbered items and has translations. Las Comadres may in fact be the best restaurant in Santa Maria which is really interesting because it's not fancy or special in any way. The magic is purely within the food that is served. I had never had Salvadorian food before Las Comadres and I felt like a changed man as soon as I left. It's really good.

It is extremely rare for me to rate 5 stars, I only wish I could rate them with 5 more stars. I love salvadorean food and now I love this place very much so. Great workers great service and equally great food. Muy buena comida y gente muy Hermosa.

My husband and I split the #2 and 8, so amazing! My life will never be the same since papusas. The rice and beans are delish and the fried corn tamales were good. The food gets a 5, the drinks bring the review to 4, don't like canned sodas at a restaurant. Next time we'll try the endalada drink, fruit salad in a cup? Yes please! Thank you Las Comadores for exposing us to El Salvadoran food!

If you're looking for bubble guts this is the place.. i have to wonder if people actually eat at some of these places they're reviewing

I went for breakfast today. And it was suppose to be open at 10am and it was 10:20 and they were not open and the waiters saw us outside and didn't even tell us anything just ignored us. Then we tried calling to ask what time they were going to open and they would answer the phone and then just hang it up. This is the second time this happens. Nada mas Se la pasan comadreando!

Glad that this place is here cause I don't have to cook all the Central American food for her to try, I can just bring her here Thx LC

First time eating Salvadorean food. The Man & I were very impressed. We were greeted promptly and had chips and salsa. Which I must say were better than most you would find in Middle Georgia! The women were so nice and friendly. They were very helpful about explaining anything or answering any questions we had. It would have helped if we spoke Spanish though. The drinks and food came quickly it was hot but not so much so you burnt your mouth. I ordered the fried Tamales with creme It was totally different than anything I've had before. The man ordered pupupas platter with yucca and rice, beans it was sooo good. It had a quaint Salvadorean theme decor mingled with Christmas for the holidays. Music played in the background. But you could still talk easily. I can't attest to the authenticity. All I know is we can't wait to go back and try more! It was an overall good experience. *I only wish you could get drink refills you get canned sodas so no refills. Oh for all you gringos :) don't go expecting a 5 star dining experience just good food and great people serving.

  • Cecy V.

I am salvadorean.. I was doubting they were going to be authentic .. And i can 100% say ..felt that i was back home! The pupusas, the yuca frita, platano frito.. Eveything.

Actually closer to 4.5... Came here last night craving papusas. We live in SF in the Mission District, so we have plenty of Salvadorian restaurants in our hood. We also have a friend from El Salvador whose mother makes homemade papusas, casamiento, etc. Having said that, we feel Las Comadres' papusas compared VERY favorably against the others. Perfectly cooked and great ingredients - yummy! My wife's beans were a little thin, and I prefer my casamiento more fried, but they were delicious even so. The staff were friendly and cheerful. And for those who felt the decor was funky, this is totally normal for authentic Salvadorian restaurants. We can absolutely recommend this place if you want great authentic food!

  • Angela G.

Great food- great pupusas. Haven't had these in years, and they were delish. Although the cheese one I wasn't too keen on, everything else was great. Great service they accommodated our large group with two babies and a 6 year old. Very attentive and great chips and salsa to start out! Completely opposite experience the second time around and the food was greasy. Our stomachs were upset after eating here.

  • Karla A.

I'm from El Salvador and this place is authentic! If you are not familiar with Salvadorian food, order "Pupusas". There is nothing like it. When my Mom hasn't visited and makes them at home, this is my go-to place!

    (4)
  • Susan B.

My cheese and bean pupusa was a delicacy in every bite and the fried plantain had a perfect crisp to them . I had filled up on chips and salsa bc the salsa was amazingly fresh and crisp. I didn't have too much of my chicken tamale but it was different from A traditional Mexican tamale . My husband enjoyed his meal as well . Still smiling .

    (5)
  • Vicky O.

The only salvadorian place in town so I don't have much to compare it to but it's good! The pupusas are great, the platano is the best and their ensalada drink is like no other!!

  • Tressa C.

Delicious! If you haven't tasted Salvadoran food this is place to start! Very friendly and the food is fresh and homemade!!!! Will definitely visit again!

  • Megan D.

Never had Salvadorian food before but absolutely loved it! The pupusas were delicious and fresh. Not usually a huge fan of beans but they were very flavorful, almost like a sauce. Also loved the fried plantains and the horchata tasted homemade! Definitely worth the stop

  • Dustin S.

Pan con pollo was amazing. Their chips and salsa were ordinary. The salsa was a bit too watery in texture than I really care for but still had good flavor. The owner of the restaurant greeted my friends and me and was really kind. Although I live in Los Angeles, I hope to one day come back just for that sandwich.

    (4)
  • Carlos A.

Wow some if the best Salvi food I have ever had. I've been to the motherland and it tastes as good. Theyre doing something right here. Ill come back to Santa Maria just for this place!!

  • Bob P.

Everything tastes so good and fresh, truly a must try. Not cheap but quite reasonable for the quality. Great service, super nice ladies in there.

    (5)
  • Amanda M.

We are here every Wednesday! It's just that good! The salsa is amazing, then you get into the pupusas! Yum!! My favorite is the cheese and squash! If you have room after the delicious pupusas then get the churros! Yummmmm!!!! See you next Wednesday!:)

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Santa Maria. I take every friend here that comes for a visit. I was fortunate to have lived with a woman from El Salvador when I was a nanny in LA. She introduced me to Pupusas and when I realized this place was here I flipped out with excitement! You have to try a pupusa with the "slaw" on top, the red sauce they bring and crema. Ask for a side of it. Yvette is always there with a smile. She is one of my favorite people. You'll love it!

    (5)
  • Ronnie C.

Very good! service was friendly and food quality tasted fresh. My friend took me for my bday lunch and it was a great gift.

  • Laura H.

There isn't a strong Salvadoran presence in Santa Maria, but Las Comadres is representing in force. Their pan con pollo is excellent. Their pupusas are good and their curtido and salsa are a 5 out of 5. They are also very accommodating of large orders if you call ahead.

    (5)
  • Rachel B.

Hands down the best pupusas I've had with my pants on. Love everything going on here. Pupusa Wednesdays are now an institution.

    (5)
  • Casey M.

The food was excellent! Flavorful and fresh. Hand made tortillas (is that what they're called?) we're delicious. Friendly service and reasonable prices. Definitely going back.

  • Wanda O.

As soon as walked in we were warmly greeted and given menus. You know this place is authentic when they start taking your order in Spanish. I have had Salvadorian food before so I knew what to expect and this place did not disappoint. The pupusas are authentic and delicious. Try not to burn yourself but you must eat right away to get the cheesy goodness inside. You can have them many ways but I like them with chicharron with cheese. I ordered the number one which included two pupusas with the cabbage salad (cutido), a chicken tamale and plantains. My hubby got the carne asada which he really enjoyed. The side rice and salad was good too but he wasn't a fan of the bean puree they gave him but overall he liked the food (mind you he is a white boy so his taste buds are limited lol). We are definitely going back to try some more of their menu items.

    (5)
  • Hector G.

Food is ok, nothing special. We had gift certificate from well-known website, they did not honor it. They really need to something about their cooks not being in plain view. Seeing their bellies while preparing pupusas was not a pretty sight. Chips ok, orchata sucks, overpowering and sweet. No really other option for pupusas, Vallarta sucks.

    (2)
  • Madge R.

Such a great place to eat. The food was AMAZING!! So authentic and the owner was such a sweet guy... Even gave us free flan! Would definitely come back.

First off, this restaurant is a hole in the wall in a funky, run down part of Santa Maria. I wouldn't say that it's a place for a business lunch. Or a romantic dinner. It has that taqueria feel. I kinda rate a restaurant on how many patrons are in there when you walk in at lunchtime. There were precisely 3, including myself. So no big crowds and no long waits to be served. I guess that's good. I'd never had Salvadorian food before, but a lot of Mexican, and this fare certainly wasn't Mex so the restaurant shouldn't be rated as a Mex restaurant. Totally different food. Should be rated as a Central American restaurant. I had the #14: two papusas, a small tamale, yellow rice, purred beans, chunks of fried potatoes, cabbage (?) and sauce for something. Everything was different from Mex food, so it's hard for me to rate it. There's nothing to compare it to. I'll try it somemore and update this review. The menu is hard to read as the pictures are really small and there are a lot of them crammed on a little card. My #14, with a Salvadorian version of Horchata (dark brown) and tip came to $20. A little pricey for a Mex lunch. They usually run around $15.

Since I found Las Comadres in 2005, I have been coming. Their popusas are very tasty and their ensalada drink is very good as well. I didn't enjoy their orchata drink, as it was a little to thick for me, but it's personal preference because my boyfriend absolutely loved it. The service is great. The women who work there are so friendly. It's a regular for me.

  • Liliana C.

One of the few Salvadorian restaurants in town... The food wasn't that good for the prices. I've had much better pupusas. The staff wasn't very friendly either, I kept on asking for a straw, then a napkin, then water, then sour cream and it seemed like I was bothering them every time. They weren't even busy.

    (2)
  • Carlos M.

I'm writing this review after eating here twice. The fiirst time I had the chicken tamales and the second time I had the pupusas. The chicken tamales were small and didn't have enough chicken. The black beans and rice weren't any better. The rice didn't have any flavor and the black beans were pureed?! The pupusas were supposed to be filled with chicharrón,black beans and cheese. They were flat and were mostly filled with cheese. The rice and black beans(casamiento) were like a soup. Lastly, the prices are very high for an area like Santa Maria. They are charging LA area prices in a small central CA town with hard working middle class people.

Wow! What an amazing experience we had, both with food and service. I read about this place in the New Times and am so glad I explored it for myself. I have had pupusas from a Salvadorian place in Belize and have been craving them ever since. I have to say that Las Comadres blew them away with their incredible flavors. I had combo with a choice of two pupusas and a side of beans and rice. One was cheese while the other was zucchini and cheese, simply divine. The rice was so flavorful and the bean side was creamy and delicate. The slaw, called curdido was a excellent condiment/side that only enhanced the remarkable plate. The service was beyond excellent and they were on top of everything. I can't wait to return to this gem.

Stopped here for a quick lunch with my fellow employee before an install. I was supremely satisfied with all they offered from the quaint storefront entrance to the decor and helpful service. My buddy though was leery to start with and didn't quite enjoy himself as much as I did. Very authentic (I think) and delicious.

Authentic menu, and honestly one of the best meals I've had in a long time! The service was fast and friendly. And the restaurant was clean.

  • Jackie S.

It was our first time trying Salvadorian food and we loved it! The lady at the counter was so helpful explaining the menu to us, took close to ten minutes explaining the different pupusas and other dishes to us. We of course ordered pupusas, our favorite one being filled with loroco! We were a little hesitant to try the loroco, but it had such a unique flavor to it. The slaw that comes with it has a nice zing and we found we didn't care to eat it separately but in addition to the pupusa, it was so yummy! We didn't really care for the tamales, but we ate it after the loroco papusa so that might explain why. The restaurant doesn't have fancy decorations and is rather open, but the food and friendly service more than made up for this!

  • Greg R.

My son and I came here for one of his school assignments. I ordered a combination plate with beef and chicken that was very flavorful. My son ordered the carne asada that was also good. We each ordered the "Ensalada" drink after reading the favorable comments in other reviews. It was a very good mixture of pineapple, apple, peach juices with tiny pieces of fruit---I highly recommend it. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was clean. Prices were a little on the high side. Overall a good experience. I plan to come back sometime...

  • Rob F.

I'm alway's up for new tastes, this disappointed. Probably very authentic as it had that ambience ? Not sure . . . one bad is my card was overcharged and I didn't notice till my statement almost a month later. 85.24 for three people for lunch. It should have been 51.00 -52.00 dollars? Pushing 30.00 per person here is nuts. So a bad experience for me, I simply won't return.

  • Marcie P.

This was the first time my son & I had Salvadorian food & it was WONDERFUL!! Staff was very friendly & it is a cute & clean place. The pupusas were divine & the rice was so delicious!! The beans are a different texture then I'm use to but really REALLY good!! I don't think the TV is necessary unless there is a ball game on but that's just me :)

Wonderful restaurant on West Main serving Salvadorean Cuisine. Excellent food, the Pupusas are to die for! Excellent plantain. Yum, I'm getting hungry. The family that runs the place is super friendly and all the food is cooked to order right in front of you. The atmosphere is homey.

This place was pretty excellent. The pupusas are freshly made and come in generous portions. The casamiento was top notch as well. The staff is super friendly...

It's been a while since I've been blown away by a restaurant. this place is ridiculously good. very friendly service, fair prices, and a clean place. Papusas were great, but the sides were as good or better! Worth a 30 min drive from SLO. 5 stars for sure!

Yum! I found one of my new favorite restaurants in this town! I was fortunate to be browsing through the Santa Maria Sun newspaper this afternoon and ran across a small advertisement. I know pupusas when I see them! I drove over right after work and came to find a typical Salvadorean restaurant, bright colors, pictures and paintings from the home country, and friendly welcoming people. I ordered combination #1 which is 2 pupusas (your choice of fillings), 1 tamal, and platanos maduros (plantains). The waitress started me off with chips and salsa. Chips were hot and the salsa was flavorful. My plate came after about 10 minutes and everything was piping fresh. I got pupusas de revueltas (pork, beans & cheese) y de calabazas (squash) and cheese. These are good on their own, but what really brings pupusas together is good curtido--the Salvadorean kimchi or saeurkraut. The tangy pickled cabbage helps cut down the heaviness of the cheese. The tamale and platanos were simple goodness. I was so excited about the place that I wanted to tell them about Yelp and how people like the restaurant, but my Spanish skills are less than average, especially since I've been watching Korean dramas all week! Ha! :) Please go check this place out..you won't be disappointed.

Delicious pupusas and plantain. Great family service. Very friendly. Great price.

  • J C.

Amazing! One of the only three good restaurants in Santa Maria. The pupusas are amazing. Platanos (plantains) are amazing. Service is phenomenal... Sometimes the servers speak limited English, but they're not intimidating and easy to communicate with by using gestures and pointing to pictures. Please support this ma n pa business!

    (5)
  • Crystal I.

Yelp strikes again! Another winner :) The pupusa combos are the way to go! The pork pupusas were amazing, my sister inhaled them!! I enjoyed the savory squash & cheese pupusas. The carne asada platter was delicious too. The rice & black bean sauce was really good. We have a new favorite spot!

    (5)
  • Maribel M.

My experience with Salvadorian food is limited, but this is definitely the best that I have had so far. My husband and I tried the combos. Both came with pupusas (we had the ones with beans and chicharrón), a chicken tamal, and beans. We also tried a few of the other items on the menu, including the plátanos. The portions, at least on what we ordered, are generous. Everything was great - very flavorful and fresh. The service was quick and attentive. As a bonus, when you order Coke, they give you bottled Coke from Mexico.

    (5)
  • Aura A.

I love this restaurant. They have a huge selection of authentic Salvadorean food and have amazing service. My favorite pupusas here are the refried beans and cheese, cheese and loroco, and cheese and zucchini. Their plantains are delicious and cooked to perfection. They also offer different Salvadorean desserts such as empanadas or nuegados that you can't get at other Salvadorean restaurants. I can't emphasize enough how great the service is, everyone is super friendly and very fast.

    (5)
  • Veronica T.

Great Salvadorean food, especially the plantains and beans. The popusas are delicious - try the mixed ones! If you want a refreshing fruity drink (not too sweet) try the Ensalada, it's full of mango, apple and a third fruit that I can't recall.

  • Mack L.

I'm not an expert on El Salvadorian food, so I can't give them a 5 stars. I'm going to give them 4 because everything was so good and awesome, but I have no idea what to compare their food to. We were in town from San Francisco for a wedding up in Nipomo, a few miles from Santa Maria. We were staying at the Santa Maria Inn and wanted to eat somewhere that was highly rated on Yelp so we gave this a shot. I went with what other people have suggested and go the #1 combo: 2 Pupusas, Plantains and a Tamale. I went with the Pork and Cheese Pupusa and it was amazing. So warm, fresh and cheesy. The tamale was also very good, but I thought the corn/maze could have been a bit more grainy. Maybe this is the style, I don't know, but it tasted great, just a little gelatinous. The plantains were also very good. The service at this restaraunt was fast and friendly. I would DEFINITELY eat here again when passing through Santa Maria. Yum!

  • Christopher M.

I'd never had Salvadorean food before coming to this place, but everything so far has been great. The pupusas are always hand made to order, and I had to open myself to the possibility that maybe Mexicans don't have the market cornered on beans. I gave four our of five stars because I'm not an authority on any of the dishes they serve, but I do know that I've never come away disappointed. Always try to save room for some fried plantains at the end. You may even luck out and get them just a bit overcooked so they're chewy around the edges...almost like a caramel. I also have to say that although everything is different, there are about three to five different cooks in the back, and there is some variance between them in cooking styles and donenesses. They're all delicious, but I would like to see just a tad more consistensy, either that, or to learn who does what which way so I might order different things depending on who is cooking, but I suppose that is on me to do.

Been here twice, great food first time I've ever eaten Salvadorian food ,it was an awesome and clean place good music good service. little far to drive, but worth it

  • Travis M.

Fantastic Papusas! The ensalada drink- amazing. However, make sure you budget your time well. They make everything by hand, and they are in no way in a hurry about it. Hour wait for the food.... At a minimum

  • Megan B.

Great family run local restaurant. Worth driving two miles off the freeway. Papusas were delicious.

  • John H.

This nice little Salvadorean restaurant offers a break from the monotony of Mexican restaurants with identical menus that proliferate around the Santa Maria area. The pupusas are wonderful, as well as their breakfast plates. It's a good stop to make if you are going to the mall.

    (4)
  • Matt M.

I'm usually not super adventurous when it comes to food, but was taken here by some friends while in the area. I have never had El Salvadorian food before so I wasn't sure what to expect. The waitress was very friendly, but didn't speak any english. Thankfully the menu had pictures! While I didn't know exactly what the pictures were, it's safe to say that the tamales, plantaines, and pupusas were delicious. A place I'd be willing to go back to again, but first I need to learn a bit more of the language. LOL!

Once in a while, I get the urge to try a local joint I haven't been to before. It had something to do with the delicious-looking BBQ meats that I saw in an ad on the local papers. Curious, my family and I decided to go inside and try the place. The interior is downright simple, complete with murals that illustrated life in El Salvador as welI as a TV tuned into Univision. Not surprisingly, the entire menu is in Spanish. At least I could understand most of the items on their menu thanks to my memory of college-level Spanish (hint: "bistec" is steak, "pollo" is chicken, "camarones" is shrimp). Thankfully there is a menu with English translations on it, so it took out some of the guesswork from our orders. I ended up trying a combo plate that had chicken and beef along with a salad, rice, beans, and tortillas on the side (the real stuff cooked on the griddle, not those ones you get at Taco Bell). While it was a delight to eat, it did seem a little pricey for what I got. However, our server also gave us some drinks to try -- tamarind, guava, and a really sweet green drink (I forgot the name). All tasted like they were freshly made. He also made a point of "Try the papusas!" a lot. After I read what goes into the papusas, I'd want to try one myself on my next visit. So, if you are looking for some place to eat that's radically different from where you typically go, try Los Comadres.

Good and unique (which is what we need in Santa Maria). Service has been great and food has always been solid. We've got enough great Mexican Food in this town to turn the heads of many out-of-towners, but I get real "WOWs" when when take them here. I think everybody in town should try this place at least twice. They are hard working folks with a family feel in the kitchen. Always keeping it fresh and tasty... for that we should all be thankful in this town of to many Taco Rocos & Burrito Locos.

I think there is a misconception out there that a meal must be expensive to be first-rate. I find that if the chef is passionate and well trained (even if by his Mexican) the food is a culinary pleasure. Many people only go to high-end restaurants to explore their palettes'. I am all for the $100 meal, eat them often, but we need to lend ourselves to food exploration. That means, stepping outside the status quo (because the status is not quo) and trying an ethnic restaurant. Nouveau cuisine is so beautifully arranged on a plate, you know that someone's fingers have been all over it. Some of the best food that has entered my mouth came from small-besmirched restaurants with a chef that was pouring his soul into the food. Rant done- this week I had a SPECTACULAR meal in Santa Maria at a Salvadoran restaurant called Las Comadres. Located on Main Street (just a block from the ghost town mall) this was like leaving the country without a passport. The TV blared Spanish language soap operas, stunning tapestries illustrated street life in El Salvador and signs on the wall told Papa's to control their children. The cooks were as authentic looking as the cerveza signs stating beer keeps away sadness. We started with chips, salsa, and a Salvadorian beer, Cerveza Suprema. Gary order the Platano con miel and crema, which is a tropical plantain (brother to the banana) sautéed then covered with maple syrup and sour cream. Usually ordered at the end of the meal, this exotic blending of flavors was just right. That dessert first rule was fun to translate. The house specialty is Pupusas, a dish like no other and one of my most desired. These maze wonders are stuffed with anything from cheese, pork, beans, rice and more. They range from $1.99 to 2.25 each. They are fried and served like an extra thick tortilla. You then put the cabbage, onion, mixture on them, sprinkle the Salvadoran tomato sauce and pick them up and engorge yourself. We started with the Revueltas, which had chicharrion, cheese, and beans. I did the Loroco, which is cheese, and flour mixed and shoved into the Pupusas. Our favorite was a Queso con calabaza, a cheese and squash mix. Los Comadres also has homemade tamales that you can order in combination with the Pupusas, along with plantains and rice and beans. Everything on the menu was outstanding and so reasonably priced, I felt like I was stealing. They also do catering, so you can order 20 Pupusas with rice and beans for your next party. I did this once for Thanksgiving that we ate at the beach over a bonfire, and our friends are still talking about that exceptional meal.

This place is amazing! Their black beans and rice are to die for, and so are the pupusas (sp?) and plantains! I wish I didn't live in SLO, because I'd eat here ALL THE TIME! The only thing I don't like are the tamales because they have a weird gelatin texture that other tamales don't have.

One of the few good things about living in Santa Maria (along with most of the eateries there) and about the only thing I miss since I moved back to L.A. I can tell you that, when it comes to the PUPUSAS (not "papusas"), I haven't found a single place that makes them better and in certain parts of L.A. there are Salvadoran restaurants on every corner. There are those that may complain about the price and, yes, this place is a little pricey compared to other Salvadoran restaurants but in Santa Maria most mom and pop places are a little pricey compared to other cities. I have to admit that I didn't like the other dishes that I tried but I didn't try them all. The empanadas (mashed plantain stuffed with "leche poliada", a sort of custard) are incredible and well worth the price for three per serving. There are none like them even in El Salvador and most places will try to make up for the lack of flavor by making them bigger while this place doesn't need to. The drinks are incredible, especialy the "arrayan" (that green drink that a previous poster didn't know) which is made from a close cousin to the guava. When I lived there, the service was always great with the exception of a waitress that wasn't happy there but I overheard her talking to someone one day and telling them that she would be leaving Santa Maria soon. It was even better when the husband of the owner was there as he was always happy to see you and treated you like an old friend.

While on a recent trip up the California coast I decided to try some places that were highly rated on Yelp. Las Comadres did not disappoint. Between me and the GF we had a sampling of pupusas and other items on the menu. They were all great. If I had to chose a favorite it would have to be the bean and cheese pupusas. I know your probably thinking how great can they be they are only beans and cheese. Well I can tell you they are the BEST!! The food was so good we ordered some more Pupusas to take back to the hotel and eat for breakfast the next morning. Las Comadres rivals many of the places in L.A. I have tried. Next time I drive up the Cali Coast I will be sure to stop by Las Comadres.

Affordable and very authentic. The pupusas were ok, not the best I have had, but still tasty. The service was really good.

One of my friends suggested one Saturday night that we come here for dinner. Prior to coming here I had never eaten Salvadorian food before but needless to say, she managed to pop that cherry for me, and in a very good way. I'm officially hooked on it now. We both tried the pupusa combos; I ordered the ones with pork and cheese. The rice and black beans on the side were also a very nice addition, along with the pickled cabbage. That meal filled me up and the price wasn't too bad either. Definitely sent me into a food coma that night though! Only reason I knocked off a star is because they close kind of early (9 PM on a Saturday as far as I remember), and I'm a guy who enjoys eating dinner late on a weekend.

The service was great and the food was delicious! The beef stew and the plantains were awesome! The pork pupusas were very good and if I lived in Santa Maria I would go to Las Comadres a lot!

I love this place. It is one of the best restaurants in Santa Maria. Everything on the menu is great and the prices are reasonable as well. If you have never had Salvadorian food you need to try this place. I recommend the pulpusas, yucca root and fried plantains to start. Everything on the menu that I have tried has been great and the staff was friendly also.

I have never had Salvadorian food other than this restaurant. I can't judge how authentic it is or how it compares to other Salvadorian restaurants. I have been here a handful of times and it has always been extremely delicious. The plantains, pupusas, tamals, beans, etc are all excellent. The only thing I've ever had here that wasn't very good was the fried yucca. But I think that has less to do with the restaurant, and more with the fact that fried yucca would probably never be good at any restaurant

Thanks to Yelp, we successfully avoided a bathroom-inspiring burger joint on our long trip back from Santa Ynez to San Francisco and discovered this little gem. The pork + cheese papusa was delicious with the added bonus of being interactive (add your own cabbage + sauce). The chicken tamales were also tasty with the added bonus of potatoes (I've never seen a potato in a tamale before and I do love my potatoes)! The most outstanding, though, were the chips and salsa.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
